Bleeding After Anal Intercourse

April 1, 2002

Question

I have been having anal sex about once a month for the last six months with my fiance. He really enjoys it, and I must admit I do too.

However, since the first time we did it I have been bleeding everytime I 'go' to the bathroom. It is actually very painful for me to 'go'. Could you please tell me what I can do? Thank you.

Answer

You are bleeding, which is your body's way of sending you red flags, no pun intended. It sounds like the anal intercourse injured you. At the very least, it may have created hemorrhoids, which often bleed when a person has a bowel movement.

It is also possible that the anal intercourse created a small fissure. It is possible that the stool is scraping across a fissure and causing it to bleed. The bottom line, no pun intended, is that bleeding isn't normal and you need to see a doctor in order to diagnose exactly what is wrong.

Meanwhile, lay off anal intercourse until you are better.
