Does You Need an Enema before Anal Sex?

December 17, 2002

Question

Dear Dr. Love,

My husband and I have been together for over twenty years now. Things in the bedroom have been routine since the day we were married, and recently my husband has asked if I would be willing to try anal sex.

We've stuck to missionary position for the past twenty years, and I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know much about anal sex. I've heard rumors that you have to receive an enima before you have the anal sex. Is this true?

Also, would I be in a lot of pain afterwards? It might be an ideal sexual experience for my husband, but would I get any benefit from it?

Answer

No, an enema isn't necessary before anal sex. I suppose if you were constipated and had stool trapped in the lower bowel, then an enema might be in order. But, if you were that constipated, I don't imagine you'd be in the mood for anal intercourse!

Here's what you need to know about anal intercourse. Forty three percent of married women surveyed engage in anal intercourse. Of that forty three percent, forty percent of the women said that they found it pleasurable.

The key to a pleasant experience is to use a good lubricant (the rectum doesn't lubricate the way the vagina does). The anus is also less flexible than the vagina, so your husband needs to go slowly, thrust gently, and not go very deeply.

Also, because the rectum doesn't lubricate naturally and because it isn't as pliable as the vagina, you must be careful not to tear your tissues, which will make you vulnerable to infection. Once a year have your rectum examined, just to make sure that you haven't injured yourself, which shouldn't happen if you follow the above steps.
