Question

Hello Dr. Love,

My friend wanted me to ask about something her husband does all the time. They have been married about 10 years and for awhile he hid this but now he doesn't seem to care if it bothers her or not.

What he does is put his hand in his pants and plays with himself all the time, when he watche's tv or in bed with or without her. Doesn't matter if his sister or brother in law are around either.

This habit is embarrassing and making her sick. It's getting to the point where she doesn't want to have sex with him. What causes him to want to do this all the time and how can she get him to stop? He doesn't do it to the point of coming but he seems to have a need to have a contant erection.

Thanks for any advice you can give her.

He may be engaged in this behavior as an act of aggression against his wife. If the problem isn't relational, then the only other likely cause of such obsessive auto-eroticism (masturbation) is disturbed brain chemistry.

If, for example, he is not producing enough serotonin--the feel good chemical--then he may be trying to artifically manufacture these chemicals by another feel good activity. He should see a doctor and consider trying an anti-depressant drug.
