December 21, 1998

Question

Hello!
During foreplay my boyfriend swears that he can taste something sweet comming from my nipples when he is sucking on them... I am not pregnant, nor have I ever had any kids. What could this be? Is it his imagination?
Thanks much!

Answer

Yes, it is possible for a woman who is not pregnant to a secrete a clear or milky discharge from her breasts. This can occur during puberty and for as long as two years after pregnancy. The secretions are usually caused by high levels of the hormone prolactin, but may also appear when a person takes high blood pressure medications, antidepressants, tranquilizers or contraceptive pills. If you are on any of the above drugs, speak to your doctor about the side effect you are having. But, be sure not to stop a prescription drug before talking to your doctor.

Fluid discharge can also be a symptom of a tumor of the pituitary gland. So, consult your doctor and get checked out.
