Man Whose Foreskin Hurts

November 1, 1999

Question

Hi, I'm a 20 year old uncircumcised male. My foreskin makes it hard for me to have sex without pain. So recently i've been pulling the foreskin back and leaving it like that all day hoping it would 'desensitize' it. Is that a good idea?

Most of the pain is gone now but i want also want to 'desensitize' it more so i can last longer during intercourse. I would like your opinion on this matter, thank you.

Answer

Any time the body is in pain, you must pay attention. Pain is a warning signal that something isn't right.

There are two main possibilities here. First, your foreskin may be too tight. Since you say that retracting the foreskin has minimized the pain, there is a good chance that you are actually loosening the skin up.

Since the pain isn't completely gone, I want you to see a urologist. You need to find out exactly what is going wrong. If your foreskin isn't too tight, you may be suffering from a minor infection that a course of antibiotics will cure. You must take care of this problem.

If you have an infection, it will get worse, and harder to treat, and/or lead to other health problems. Even if your pain is due to a tight foreskin and not an infection, you need to realize that unresolved pain often makes the 'plumbing' stop functioning correctly. Dreading pain is a real 'downer,' if you know what I mean.

So, promise me that you will ask your internist for a referral to a urologist. And, please, don't let your internist attempt to diagnose the problem. This isn't his speciality.

Let me know what you find out.
