Playing the Waiting Game

Question

I am divorced and have known this woman for almost 3 years. I have always been attracted to her. She has been dating the same person for about 4 years and several months ago when we were together for lunch (business), I noticed a ring on her finger. I inquired about it and she said that she was engaged, however no date has been set.

A week ago we and 2 others met for drinks after work. She no longer had the ring on. After several drinks she leans over and kisses me; not a peck either. Things progressed and we spent a good deal of the night making out and having fun. I called her the next day and told her that I had a great time and that I would like to get together again.

She responded that 'technically' she is still engaged and needs to have a talk with her fiance. She also added that she would like to see me again as well. I wrote her an email detailing my feelings and she responded that she needed time to sort things out.

My question is how much time should go by before I inquire as to where I may stand in her life? I realize that I've waited for this opportunity for 3 years so rushing this will lead no where. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. If I had room I would send you the emails. Signed. . . 'Playing the Waiting Game'.

Answer

There is no rule about how long you should go. You need to follow your own heart and do what feels right for you. If you don't feel comfortable waiting any longer, then don't. If you feel all right with waiting, then do.

When you are ready to inquire, you can start by saying, 'You told me that you needed time to sort things out and I wonder where you are in the process.' I have the impression there is more to this story than meets the eye. This woman seems very conflicted about whether or not she is ready to give her fiance up. She was engaged, then removed the ring and kissed you till your lips were chapped, then she got cold feet and said that she was still technically engaged.

The point is she is conflicted and you need to be careful to protect your heart. Above all make sure that her conflicts are resolved before you venture forth.
