She Put Everything But the Kitchen Sink in Her Bra

November 25, 2002

Question

i went to las vegas last year with my wife and her brother and his wife laurie.

while in the casino laurie made a pocket out of her bra and carried her money--credit cards and car keys all inside her bra.. she had a tight fitting tank top and these items could be seen showing through her jersey.

my wife thought it looked tacky. should we have brought her attention to it or mind our own business? we said nothing and she did this all week and even on the flight home. bet you never got one like this before.

Answer

I find that it's best to not offer unsolicited advice or comments. If you really feel the need to give your feedback, it's best to "knock" on the other person's psychological door before entering.

The way you do this is to ask permission before offering the advice or comment. So you would say, "I was wondering if you were interested in hearing some feedback from me about your appearance."

If the other person says go ahead, then at least you know you aren't barging in uninvited. This rule of thumb should apply to relatives, spouses, co-workers, and even our children, who also need to feel that their boundaries are being respected.
