Your Childhood is a Blank

Question

I've just ended an engagement and I am trying to heal and get advice. I attract the same type of men, and act as the caretaker, continuing to hope, and getting hurt in the long run.

I've read that the reason is because of unresolved childhood problems. My problem is I can't remember my childhood. I don't think I am purposely blocking it out, but I can't recollect details to start examining why I attract these men.

Where do I start? I've just ended an engagement and I am trying to heal and get advise.

Answer

Repression is a defense mechanism that is designed to protect you from feeling very strong, painful or threatening emotions. The fact that your memories are completely repressed gives us some clue as to how much you suffered as a child.

The greater the emotional trauma, the stronger the emotional reaction. The greater the reaction, the more repression occurs.

Here are some ideas for accessing your buried memories: talk to relatives and ask them to tell you stories about your childhood, which can spark your own memories; look at photos of yourself when you were young and see if that helps your recall; and last but not least try hypnosis, which is a way to reach the repressed part of yourself.

Good luck.
